Enabling-1. Students know how to describe a person's appearance.
2. Students have the sense of "past-tense" sentence structure in English.
3. Students can use the past tense of "be" verbs accurately.
Activities:
1. Warm-up & Introducing some of the new sentence patterns.(20min)
2. Introducing the past tense of "be" verbs & some drills. (15min)
3. Play the game "大家來找碴". (10min)
Teaching procedure:
1. Warm-up
1.1 Give students handouts with sever people different in appearance to review the
sentence pattern "…is tall/thin."
1.2 Add new vocabulary and sentence patterns in describing a person, such as
"…is wearing a dress." Give students handouts with new vocabulary of "colors" and "dressing."
1.3 Divide students into seven groups and ask each group to make a sentence with the
given subjects, I, you, he/she, Tom/Sue, the dog, we, it, and the structure
"S is/are … " to help students review the usage of "be" verbs.
2. introducing the new pattern
2.1 Show two pictures, one is "John" now, the other is "John" one year ago.
Compare these two pictures by using present tense and past tense.
2.2 Ask students "Were you a junior high school student last year?" to combine
the use of past tense with students' experiences. At the same time, let students be familiar with "I was…" "he/she was…" "we were…"
2.3 Give drills by asking students to substitute the subjects and change present tense to past tense of these sentences:
"I am thirsty."→ he/she/they/you/Mary was/were thirsty
"I am at home."→ he/she/they/you/Mary was/were at home
2.4 Do practice two in textbook p.69. Students are asked to listen to the be-verbs of
each sentence and write down what they have heard. One of my purposes is to
give students chance to do listening comprehension, the other is to make sure they
understand the pattern of past tense and the spellings of be-verbs.
2.5 Do the oral practice in textbook p.70. Also, I intend to repeat the new pattern to
help students memorize it. Besides, this time they are informed with many
"situations" that can use past tense. For example, last week, this morning.
I want them to know these situations and can make sentences with past tense
according to these situations.
3. game playing: 大家來找碴
Ⅰ First, divide students into two groups.
Ⅱ Then, show two pictures with different appearances of one girl, Cathy. One picture is what the girl looked last year, the other is what she looks now.
Ⅲ Ask students to find what the differences between these two pictures by using sentences such as, "Cathy is tall now." "Cathy was heavy last year." "Cathy is wearing a red dress now." The group that tells more differences is the winner. |
